Gua Sha is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) technique that involves gently scraping the skin with a smooth-edged tool to stimulate circulation, release tension, and promote lymphatic drainage. When used on the face, it helps sculpt, depuff, and brighten the complexion by encouraging healthy blood flow. On the body, gua sha is applied more firmly to relieve muscle pain, reduce inflammation, and break up stagnation in the meridians.

Benefits:

  • Improves circulation and skin tone

  • Reduces puffiness and fine lines (facial)

  • Eases muscle tension and pain (body)

  • Supports detoxification and overall energy flow

Contraindications:
Avoid gua sha over broken skin, rashes, sunburns, or active acne. It is not recommended for individuals with bleeding disorders, during pregnancy (on the abdomen or lower back), or for those on blood thinners.

FAQs

  • Gua Sha should not be painful, but you may feel some mild discomfort or tenderness in areas with more stagnation or tension. We always adjust the pressure to your comfort level and check in with you during the session.

  • Gua Sha may leave temporary marks called sha—they can look like red or purple patches and are a normal response. These are not bruises from trauma but a release of stagnant blood and energy from the tissues. They typically fade within 3–7 days and are part of the healing process.

  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing and stay hydrated before and after your session. Avoid heavy meals right before your appointment. If it’s your first time, we’ll walk you through what to expect and answer any questions you may have.

  • Yes! After Gua Sha, it’s best to:

    • Stay warm and avoid cold drafts

    • Rest and take it easy

    • Drink plenty of water to support detoxification

    • Avoid alcohol, caffeine, or intense workouts for 24 hours

  • Gua Sha may not be appropriate for people with certain conditions like open wounds, rashes, blood clotting disorders, or those taking blood thinners. We’ll always review your health history beforehand to ensure it's safe and suitable for you.

  • This depends on your goals. For general wellness or stress relief, once a month is great. For chronic pain, tension, or detox support, sessions every 1–2 weeks may be recommended. We’ll work with you to create a schedule that fits your needs.
